Bom Jesus do Monte opening hours
Why I will not give you a timetable
Because I do not have one I trust. The sources I can reach disagree about the funicular, and neither of them is the operator’s own published schedule. Hours also move with the season, the weather and the church calendar, and a religious site with services in it is entitled to change its mind about when the doors are open. If your plan depends on the ride rather than the climb, ask the Confraria directly; the phone number and email in the footer are theirs, and the Confraria’s own site is the place to check.
What does not vary: the grounds. There is no gate and no ticket office, which is why they can be open at any hour and why there is nothing to buy. If the funicular is shut, the 573 steps are still there, and so is the road.
Plan around the funicular’s hours if you need it, and see when to come for the parts of the day I would actually choose.
Frequently asked questions
What time does Bom Jesus do Monte open?
The grounds do not close: they are open around the clock, all year, free of charge. The basilica opens roughly 08:00 to 19:00 in summer and 09:00 to 18:00 in winter, and the funicular keeps seasonal hours that two sources report differently.
Is Bom Jesus do Monte open on Sundays?
The grounds are, as they are every day. Sunday is a working day for a sanctuary, so services affect when you can walk around inside the basilica, and the bus up from Braga drops to hourly.
What time does the funicular run?
One source gives 09:00 to 20:00 in summer and 09:00 to 18:00 in winter; another gives 08:00 to 20:00 daily with departures every 30 minutes. They cannot both be right, so check with the Confraria before you rely on it, and treat the stairway as your fallback.
