The best time to visit Bom Jesus do Monte

The short answer: early morning or the hour before dark. The grounds are free and never close, so you are not tied to opening hours unless you want the basilica or the funicular, and the middle of the day is when the coaches from Porto are on the hill. Spring and autumn give you the climb without the heat; the stone is slippery after rain in any season.

By the hour

Full-day trips from Porto run eight to ten and a half hours and have to fit a whole itinerary in, so they reach Braga in the middle of the day. That is my consistent experience of the hill: quiet early, busy from late morning, thinning out through the afternoon and quiet again by evening. Since the grounds cost nothing and never close, the cheapest fix for crowds here is simply to come at a different hour, which is not true of most places on a UNESCO list.

If you want the basilica or the funicular, you are working to their hours instead, and those are seasonal and disputed enough that I have given them their own page. The funicular in particular is worth checking the day before rather than assuming.

By the season

Summer is hot for 116 m of stone steps and it is when the day trips are thickest. Spring and autumn are kinder in both respects. Winter afternoons are short but the light across Braga from the churchyard is the best of the year, and the basilica closes earlier. Whenever you come, the granite is slick after rain and the descent is the part where people slip. What is actually up there, at any hour, is on the what-to-see page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of day to visit Bom Jesus do Monte?

Early morning or the last hour of daylight. The grounds are free and open around the clock, so you can visit outside the hours when the day trips from Porto are on the hill, which is the middle of the day.

What is the best month to visit?

Spring or autumn, for two reasons: 573 steps in the summer heat is work, and summer is when the coach itineraries are busiest. Winter days are short but the view over Braga is at its clearest.

Is Bom Jesus do Monte crowded?

It fills up in the middle of the day when the guided trips arrive and empties again afterwards. Because entry is free and there are no timed tickets, avoiding the crowd costs nothing more than choosing a different hour.
